toilet install

Installing a toilet might sound like a daunting task, but with the right tools and a little know-how, it can be a surprisingly simple DIY project. Whether you’re replacing an old, outdated toilet or just want to take matters into your own hands, doing it yourself can save you a lot of money—and give you the satisfaction of getting it done right.

No need to call in a plumber for this one! With a few basic steps, you’ll have your new toilet up and running in no time. Ready to take on the challenge? Check out this step-by-step guide for toilet installation from Ortega Plumbing Heating & Air.

First Things First: Tools and Materials

Before you get started, you’ll need to make sure you have the right tools and materials on hand. You don’t want to run into any roadblocks halfway through the job, so it’s a good idea to gather everything you’ll need before diving in. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • New Toilet – Make sure it fits the space and matches your bathroom style.
  • Wax Ring – This seals the toilet to the drain and prevents leaks.
  • Toilet Bolts – These are used to secure the toilet to the floor.
  • Plumber’s Tape – To help prevent leaks around the water supply connection.
  • Wrench/Socket Set – You’ll need this for loosening and tightening bolts.
  • Screwdriver – This is for installing the toilet bolts and other hardware.
  • Adjustable Pliers – Handy for gripping and turning plumbing connections.
  • Bucket and Towels – In case any water spills when disconnecting the old toilet.

Once you’ve gathered your supplies, you’re ready to begin the installation process! Let’s get started with the first step.

Step 1: Shut the Water Off and Drain the Toilet

As a rule of thumb, start by shutting off your water supply before working on a major plumbing project. For a toilet installation, you can simply turn off the shut-off valve to your toilet tank, which is usually located at the base of the toilet. After that, disconnect your water supply line.

Then, proceed to dry up the toilet tank and bowl. Make sure your work area is completely water-free. Grab your bucket and towels and soak up the excess water from your toilet or floor. Only then should you proceed with removing your old toilet.

If you’re replacing one, unscrew the nuts from the floor bolts using a wrench. Carefully lift the toilet off the flange, making sure you don’t damage the wax seal. Set the toilet aside and clean up any remaining mess.

Step 2: Prepare the Flange and Install a New Wax Ring

Next, inspect the flange (the ring that connects the toilet to the drainpipe) for damage. If the flange is cracked or broken, you’ll need to replace it before proceeding. After that, install a new wax ring onto the flange. This wax ring forms a seal between the toilet and the drain pipe to prevent leaks. Place the ring on the flange and press it gently to ensure it’s secure.

Step 3: Set the New Toilet in Place

Carefully lift your new toilet and align it with the flange. Lower the new toilet onto the flange, making sure the bolts align with the holes in the base of the toilet and pass through them. Press the toilet down to make sure it’s sitting flat on the floor, which will compress the wax ring and create a seal.

Step 4: Secure the Toilet to the Floor

Now it’s time to secure the toilet to the floor. Tighten the nuts onto the bolts using a wrench, but be careful not to overtighten. Tighten them just enough to secure the toilet without putting too much pressure on the base, which could crack it. Once the toilet is securely in place, check to see if it’s level. If it’s rocking, place shims (small plastic or wooden wedges) underneath the base to level it out, then tighten the bolts fully.

Step 5: Reattach the Water Line

New toilet is securely in place? Time to reconnect the water supply line to the tank. Hand-tighten the nut onto the inlet valve on the tank, then use an adjustable wrench to tighten it a bit more. Be careful not to overtighten. Check the hose to make sure it’s not kinked or damaged—replace it if needed.

Step 6: Attach the Toilet Tank (if Separate)

If your toilet comes with a separate tank, align the tank with the bowl and make sure the rubber gasket is in place. Carefully attach the tank to the bowl using the provided bolts. Tighten the nuts underneath the tank with a wrench. Don’t overtighten, as this can cause damage to the porcelain.

Step 7: Check for Leaks

Now, it’s time to test the seal and verify if there’s a leak. Let the water in by opening the shut-off valve. Allow the tank to fill up and check for leaks around the water supply connection, the base of the toilet, and the tank bolts. If you notice any leaks, you may need to tighten the bolts or readjust the wax ring.

Step 8: Seal the Base

Once you’re sure there are no leaks, apply a bead of caulk or silicone sealant around the base of the toilet where it meets the floor. This helps prevent water from getting under the toilet and gives the installation a clean, finished look. Allow the sealant to dry completely before using the toilet, which usually takes about 24 hours.

Step 9: Install the Toilet Seat

Next, secure the toilet seat by fastening the provided bolts into place at the top of your new toilet. Tighten the bolts securely, but again, avoid over tightening. Ensure the seat is properly aligned and functioning.

Step 10: Test and Clean Up

Finally, flush the toilet several times to make sure it’s working properly. Check again for any leaks. Once you’re confident everything is secure and functioning, clean up the area and dispose of any old materials or debris.
